Alternative Controls

In order to effectively "play" a game, the player must be able to control it.  For games with adapted controls, there is a range of possible alternative control methods.

  • Games that are controled by keyboard commands may be more easily controled with adapted or customized physical keyboards.
  • Alternatively, a person with limited movement may prefer an on-screen keyboard to control the game.
  • Some games are designed to be controlled via the mouse, and a person with physical limits may prefer an adapted mouse.
  • For some players, the mouse is difficult to control, or the pointer can be hard to see on a busy game screen.  Adaptive mouse software can help in these cases.
  • For those who can speak better than they can move, voice command is an option in some games.
  • Many games have only a few mouse or keyboard commands created by pressing keys or buttons.  These can be accommodated using switch interface software or hardware to provide alternative controls.
  • There are a wide variety of buttons, joysticks, and game consoles that are designed for specific types of movement.  It is important to find one that will work for you.
  • For people with severe movement limitations, some games can be controlled by just looking (gazing) at the desired point on the screen.
