Sound accommodations

Modern technologies use sound as well as vision to provide information.  For a person with limited hearing this can present a barrier to successful use of the device.  To accommodate for this, many technology devices include built-in adjustments that make use easier.  These built-in features include:

  • Changes to the content and volume of sound.  The simplest solution to making sounds more useful is to make them louder, though this disrupts others.  Sometimes, a better solution is to replace the often-high-frequency sounds of alerts with lower frequencies, or with custom sounds that draw a users attention.
  • If a device is to be used by a person who has very poor hearing, or in an environment where there are very loud background noises, many devices can replace audible alerts with visual or tactile signals.
  • When a device provides long dialogs, it may be able to display the closed-captioning (as in television programs or movies)
