Document Scanning

Much of the world's information is not available in electronic format.  It is printed on paper, and, as such, is not available to many people with disabilities.  However, much of this printed information can be converted to electronic by making an image of it, then interpreting that image. There are two primary ways that this can be done:

  • For material that is bound into books, magazines, or other formats, or that is too delicate to manipulate, document cameras can be used that don't require contact with the document.  Some can even "flatten" the image to account for the spine of the binding.
  • When pages are not bound, a better quality image can be obtained with a text or image scanner.  These commonly hold the page flat on a scanning surface, or pass the document over the scanner via a sheet feeder.
