Notes and memos

Almost everyone needs assistance in remembering the details of our complex lives. Depending on the movement and visual skills of a person, they may need different types of note-taking tools. While able-bodied people are able to use pencil and paper to record quick notes, shopping lists, or contact information, people with various types of disabilities may need to use alternative means to take notes. Common note-taking assistive technology falls into several broad categories:

  • For people who are blind, notes can be created using Braille keyboards and/or delivered through Braille displays
  • For some visually impaired people, those who have limited hand movement, or those who simply want to have hands-free note-taking, notes can be dictated into a device.  Such notes may be played back as a voice recording, or transcribed into text.
  • For those with memory or though organization limits, notes can be "written" into a device, and delivered at specific times (reminders), or using language or graphics to enhance recall. Some of these devices link written notes to audio recordings for additional assistance to recall.
