Pointing and Clicking

Using a "point and click" interface on a modern device depends on three basic skills, all of which can be changed to meet the needs of the individual.

  • The user must be able to position the mouse pointer over a target on the screen and move it in desirable ways. This can be assisted by using alternative mice or mouse technologies.
  • The user must be able to indicate that the thing under the pointer is of interest, by clicking, double-clicking, or dragging with the primary or secondary mouse button. This can be assisted by using specialised switches or other click behavior.
  • The user must be able to perceive the mouse pointer on the screen. This can be assisted by changing the size or color of the mouse pointer, or even by making it move in ways that guide the eye.
