Keyboards and Keyboard Adaptations

Most input to information devices is through a keyboard of some sort.  For desktop devices, this may be the conventional QWERTY keyboard.  For other devices, it may a specialized keyboard.  Keyboard interaction can be changed in many ways to make text entry easier or possible.

  • The keyboard provided with a device can be changed for another, physical keyboard with more desirable features.
  • The keyboard can be modified through the addition of new labels or physical assists.
  • The response of the keys, when pressed, can be modified to account for limited hand function of the typists.
  • The physical keyboard can be replaced or augmented with an image of a keyboard on the screen that allows text entry using the mouse.
  • A specialized keyboard for entering numbers can be added to the device.
  • Text may be entered by speaking, handwriting, or converting printed documents to a computer.
  • A person who is able to operate one or more ability switches can use them to enter text.
