Create Accessible Materials

When a teacher does not have access to accessible materials (whether because of cost or lack of availability), sometimes the quickest and easiest solution is to create what is needed from existing materials.  The tools required to do this differ depending on the way the course materials are intended to be used.

  • Written materials can often be used to create audio lessons to be played on personal devices.  This can be done by recording an environment or person, or by using text-to-speech tools to convert writing to audio.
  • When designing course websites, special accessibility tools can be used to avoid accidental barriers.
  • Many instructors now post video to YouTube and other sites to be viewed for their class.  To be accessible to deaf students, they should add captions to the video.
  • An instructor may choose to make tactile versions of their materials in Braille.
