Create/Use Macros

Macros are predefined series of instructions to perform repetitive tasks. A macro might open a user's mail program each day at 8:30, and sort the mail by the organization of the sender.  Another macro might open a word processor and paste or type in the components of the user's letterhead.  Depending on the specific program, the macro might be limited to what the user can type on the keyboard, or it might include mouse actions.  Various macro programs may include:

  • A language, commonly similar to BASIC, that the macro designer can use to define "intelligent" macros that respond to changing conditions.
  • Various ways of "triggering" the macros.  These can range of specific keyboard actions, clicking on a button, to the time of day or other environmental conditions.
  • Some macro programs allow the user to perform the desired keyboard action once, noting each keystroke, and playing these back on demand.
  • Some programs also record mouse movements, so that the macro might move to a menu command, click, move into the resulting dialog box, and typing desired text.
