Help with Hearing
Conventional telephones can be difficult to use for a person with limited hearing for a number of reasons.
- When a call is received, the phone rings. If the volume is too low, or at too high a pitch, it may be difficult to hear.
- When using the telephone, the voice of the person on the other end may be too quiet, or difficult to understand. Making the sound louder may help.
- The task of holding the handset for a long period of time can be difficult for someone with arm weakness or poor control. Headsets remove this necessity.
- For a person who uses hearing aids, holding the handset to the ear can cause feedback. Some telephones and hearing aids include technology to link the sound from the telephone directly to the hearing aid, making hearing clearer.
- Some specialized telephones and services can provide a written text transcript of what is said on the telephone, enhancing understanding for those who have limited hearing.
- For a person who is completely deaf, a TTY allows typing messages to the person being called.
